Here’s one of the first big surprises of this trip. The day before, my sister had sent me a text message pointing out the existence of a Barcelona hospital that was truly worth visiting. And now, today, our guide Isabelle is taking us there: the Hospital of the Holy Cross and Saint Paul.
Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a leading figure of Catalan modernism, this hospital is an architectural masterpiece, blending light, gardens, and pavilions with impressive artistic details. It is also the place where Antonio Gaudí, another icon of Catalan art, passed away.
The hospital originated from the merger in 1401 of several smaller Barcelona hospitals, with the aim of creating a larger, centralized establishment. The name "Sant Pau" was later added in honor of Pau Gil, a generous benefactor who contributed to the development of the institution.
Voici l'une des premières grandes surprises de ce séjour. La veille, ma sœur m'avait envoyé un SMS pour me signaler l'existence d'un hôpital barcelonais qui valait vraiment le détour. Et voilà que, dès aujourd'hui, notre guide Isabelle nous y emmène : l’Hôpital de la Sainte-Croix et l’église Saint-Paul.
Conçu par Lluís Domènech i Montaner, figure majeure du modernisme catalan, cet hôpital est un chef-d'œuvre architectural où se mêlent lumière, jardins et pavillons aux détails artistiques impressionnants. C’est également ici qu’est décédé Antonio Gaudí, autre icône de l’art catalan.
L’hôpital trouve son origine dans la fusion, en 1401, de plusieurs petits hôpitaux barcelonais, afin de créer un établissement plus grand et centralisé. Le nom "Sant Pau" a été ajouté plus tard en hommage à Pau Gil, un généreux bienfaiteur qui a contribué au développement de l’établissement.
