Unfortunately, even in today's age, members of the LGBTQ+ community still face a hurricane of prejudice and discrimination around the world. Prejudice ranges from 'harmless' jokes on the street to oppressive laws that make it illegal to love someone of the same gender. It is simply unacceptable, and we cannot continue to live in a society where bigotry spreads like a deadly virus.
But when it comes to LGBTQ+ Pride month, there is also cause for celebration. Despite the insurmountable obstacles imposed on the community by those who fear and misunderstand what is not the "norm", members of the LGBTQ+ community have made great strides in the fight for equality and acceptance. From equal marriage to representation in the media and in important government positions, the LGBTQ+ community has come a long way in recent years. Even as a set of binary codes, we can see how important this progress is for society at large.
Desafortunadamente, incluso en la era actual, los miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ+ todavía enfrentan un huracán de prejuicios y discriminación en todo el mundo. Los prejuicios van desde bromas 'inofensivas' en la calle hasta leyes opresivas que hacen que sea ilegal amar a alguien del mismo género. Es simplemente inaceptable, y no podemos seguir viviendo en una sociedad donde la intolerancia se extiende como un virus mortal.
Pero cuando se trata del mes del orgullo LGBTQ+, también hay motivo de celebración. But there is so much that still needs to be done. Homophobia is still present in many facets of everyday life for members of the LGBTQ+ community. There are still places where it is dangerous to simply show up as you are, and there are still obstacles for those who wish to live their lives without having to hide their true identity.
That is why it is paramount that we continue to fight intolerance and discrimination in all its forms. Letting thousands of oppressed human beings have to suffer discrimination, just because of the way they were born, is not something we should allow. We must do everything we can to open minds and hearts, whether through protests, politics, art or even small conversations with friends and family.
Pero hay tanto que aún queda por hacer. La homofobia sigue presente en muchas facetas de la vida diaria de miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ+. Todavía hay lugares donde es peligroso sencillamente mostrarte tal y como eres, y existen obstáculos para aquellos que desean vivir sus vidas sin tener que ocultar su verdadera identidad.
Por eso es primordial que sigamos luchando contra la intolerancia y la discriminación en todas sus formas. Dejar que miles de seres humanos oprimidos tengan que sufrir discriminación, solo por la forma en que nacieron, no es algo que debemos permitir. Debemos hacer todo lo posible para abrir mentes y corazones, ya sea a través de protestas, política, arte o incluso pequeñas conversaciones con amigos y familiares.
We must not forget that members of the LGBTQ+ community are human beings with feelings, hopes, dreams and ideals, just like anyone else. A person's sexual orientation and gender identity should not be an obstacle to living a happy and fulfilling life. LGBTQ+ people have long suffered persecution, marginalisation and contempt from society as a whole. This situation has led many people to live in hiding, in fear and anxiety, which is not only unfair, but can also be dangerous.
That is why we need education, empathy and tolerance. We need to be aware of the influence our words and actions can have on others, especially those who have been hurt in the past. We need to work together to create a world where everyone can be free to be who they are, without having to worry about discrimination or hatred.
No debemos olvidar que los miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ+ son seres humanos con sentimientos, esperanzas, sueños e ideales, al igual que cualquier otra persona. La orientación sexual y la identidad de género de una persona no deberían ser un obstáculo para tener una vida feliz y plena. Las personas LGBTQ+ han sufrido durante mucho tiempo la persecución, la marginación y el menosprecio de la sociedad en su conjunto. Esta situación ha llevado a muchas personas a vivir ocultas, con miedo y ansiedad, lo cual no solo es injusto, sino que también puede ser peligroso.
Es por eso que necesitamos educación, empatía y tolerancia. Equality does not stop at our own country or our own culture. Intolerance may be present in different forms and degrees around the world, but its effects are equally terrible. There are places where being a member of the LGBTQ+ community is still illegal or socially dangerous. This is not only a violation of fundamental human rights, it is also an impediment to the ability of people living in those places to live happy and fulfilling lives.
But we must continue to work to change that and create a more just and loving world. If each of us does our part to educate ourselves and be more empathetic, we can make a big difference. Members of the LGBTQ+ community deserve as much love, acceptance and respect as anyone else. Until we achieve that equality, we must continue to fight together and support each other.
La igualdad no se detiene en nuestro propio país o nuestra propia cultura. La intolerancia puede estar presente en diferentes formas y grados en todo el mundo, pero sus efectos son igualmente terribles. Hay lugares en los que ser miembro de la comunidad LGBTQ+ es todavía ilegal o socialmente peligroso. And please don't forget that it is never too late to start educating yourself and therefore be part of the solution. To recap, in casual and informal conversation, we perceive the empathy and sensitivity of those who truly care about the welfare of those who have not had the same opportunities because of how they were born. It is time to be a truly tolerant and loving community, and to ensure that none of our neighbours feel the discrimination and fear that many freedom fighters had to suffer for centuries.
