Just outside of a sleepy little town known as Nordegg, Alberta is the abandoned Brazeau Collieries Mine. This historical heritage site is a rare one, for it is open to anyone that may wish to explore the mines on their own (and if you do choose to explore it, do so at your own risk! π±). Obviously I was one of those explorers, and I must say that this visit has been one of the most rewarding ones yet!
Upon our arrival, we were immediately greeted by the ancient remains of technology that were used during the time of the mine's existence. Mine carts, massive engines, and rusted vehicles littered the fields, creating a very eerie atmosphere. It offered a unique glimpse into the past.
The cabins and buildings were also incredible to witness. Still in amazing condition! In terms of furniture and signs of life at home, there was not much to be had except bare wooden beams, but again, not something you see every day!
The official attraction of the heritage site--the mines--did not appear until after walking through the town. There were three mines in total, and while it would have been amazing to take a peek inside, they have been completely closed off due to safety reasons.
The next part was the best part! π€© We stumbled upon the factory/refining part of the mining business! This attraction was so much fun to explore--dangerous!.. But fun~ π
When we were settled back at home, we did some research of the mine. Once a bustling town of 3,500 people, with 450 homes and 1100 miners, Braziar Collieries Limited operated the mines from 1914 until 1955. On October 31, 1941 a huge explosion ripped though a mineshaft, taking the lives of 29 miners. In June of 1950, disaster struck again; another fire.
Unfortunately it was not fire and explosions that killed the town, but modern technology! During the early 1950s, railways began switching to diesel power, and there was no longer a need for coal. On January 14, 1955, the town officially closed.
If you made it this far, thank you so much! ππ A lot of time went into this one, so I really hope everyone is able to enjoy it! Stay safe out there, and keep exploring!
