Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to post about a pretty cool tower that we randomly happened upon!
Urban Stone Tower
One of the things that we definitely like to do is go on adventures. These adventures to take us to places that are all over the place! We sometimes are traveling to a particular area to go to a store or something, and along the way we are looking to see if there is any cool architecture or parks or something around. Sometimes we strike out and don't really find anything of interest but other times, such as this time, we find something that's pretty damn cool!
We were on our way to see some friends back in the autumn and went to an area that we don't know a lot about but I saw there was a park that was of a decent size so we looked it up and there was a lot of outdoor space but there was what looked like a stone tower. Sign me up! I love seeing things like this.
There were these cool pill boxes, though they were more of the medieval type than anything, but it was still cool to see them and their random things in the middle there.
The stone tower was definitely pretty well engineered. I know this isn't an ancient stone tower, I read the sign on the ground somewhere and it said it was built within the last 150 years or something. I think it was 100 years but I can't remember specifically now. The building is pretty cool though, it's got enough things in it to make it interesting like the hearth there on the ground. I don't know if the hearth is actually one that could be used or if it was for decoration. One thing that's sad is that they have to lock these places with gates and all kinds of stuff to prevent people from doing stupid things.
The tower itself is definitely very cool looking and it's quite large by tower building standards. I couldn't imagine being on that top parapet setting those stones in place with not really a whole lot to protect you from falling from that height lol. I'm sure they did this with scaffolding but I don't know how safe it would have been for my tastes.
The structure of it looks really cool though, I love the nature of it with the many thousands of various sized and shaped stones all over the place, with the windows and the window tops with granite blocks above them. Lots of cool stuff to admire from the architectural standpoint!
Inside there were also some things that were kind of random. I don't know what the purpose of this metal bar on the right side was lol but maybe it was a door that swung outward? Hard to say for sure.
I wonder if the place ever lets people inside. I know some of these historical places will allow people to go inside to admire the structure but only at certain times of the year so they can have park rangers and stuff around to monitor it and make sure there isn't any riffraff. We are going to have to look it up for the spring and summer to see if we can pop into it! I know I'd love to get up the stairs to the upper floor of the tower and look out at the sprawling city below.
One of the things that was interesting about the place though was that it was just very vertical. I don't know if this would have been a comfortable place to live lol. It doesn't offer a lot in the way of movement space but perhaps this was intended more to be a protective building than anything? I don't know a lot about the history of it but I'll have to look it up to see what it was. I vaguely remember that this was dedicated to some rich dude so it wasn't anything of true historical nature and importance from the early American colony days or anything.
It would still be sweet to go into it and see the various things from up there and take a few photos! I don't know if I could get my wife to go up the stairs lol but I know I would certainly love to!
