The "Kulturpark Berlin", opened in 1969, was the only amusement park in the GDR. In 2001, the Kulturpark was closed and has been gradually falling into disrepair ever since.
Der 1969 erföffnete "Kulturpark Berlin" war der einzige Freizeitpark in der DDR. Im Jahr 2001 wurde der Kulturpark geschlossen und verfällt seitdem zusehens.
The main attraction was the Ferris wheel with 40 gondolas. A few years after it was closed down, the locks on the Ferris wheel were removed to prevent it from rusting. Since then, it has been turning almost imperceptibly in the wind. I had put my photo backpack in one of the gondolas. When I wanted to take it back, the gondola was already at a height of 2 metres. I was able to save it just in time.
Die Hauptatraktion war das Riesenrad mit 40 Gondeln. Einige Jahre nach der Schließlung wurde die Arretierung des Riesenrades wieder entfernt damit es nicht fest rostet. Seitdem dreht es sich bei Wind fast unmerklich. Ich hatte meinen Fotorucksack in einer der Gondeln abgestellt. Als ich ihn wieder nehmen wollte war die Gondel schon in 2 Meter Höhe. Ich konnte ihn gerade noch rechtzeitig retten.
Large parts of the former facilities and buildings were destroyed by vandalism and multiple arson attacks. A few years ago, the fence around the grounds was renewed and a security guard patrols the grounds 24 hours a day to protect the cultural park from further destruction.
Durch Vandalismus und mehrfache Brandstiftung wurde große Teile der ehemaligen Anlagen und Gebäude zerstört. Vor einigen Jahren wurde der Zaun um das Gelände erneuert und ein Wachschutz patrouliert 24 Stunden täglich auf dem Gelände um den Kulturpark vor weiterer Zerstörung zu schützen.
In 2013, the state of Berlin acquired the entire area and plans to reopen the park as an art and culture park in 2026. If this works as quickly as the BER airport, it will probably not happen until 2062.
Im Jahr 2013 erwarb das Land Berlin das gesamte Areal und plant eine Wiedereröffnung des Parks als Kunst- und Kulturpark für das Jahr 2026. Wenn das genauso zügig funktioniert wie der Flughafen BER wird das wohl eher erst im Jahr 2062 passieren.
