As times have changed, so have modern lifestyles. People are under more stress, and late marriages have become the norm. With slower economic growth and the high cost of raising children, many people have chosen to have pets instead of kids, leading to a surge in pet numbers, even surpassing the number of newborns. Among the most popular pets, cats have seen a yearly increase, probably because they are more independent, easier to care for, and their meows don’t bother the neighbors. Most of my female friends love cats and often visit cat cafes together to see and play with the cats.
In Taiwan, there is a famous cat-themed location called Houtong Cat Village. The cat village is located behind Houtong Station. This area used to be dormitories for miners. After the decline of the coal mining industry, it became a wasteland. However, kind-hearted residents of Houtong started taking care of the stray cats left behind, providing them with food and shelter. The cat population gradually increased, attracting attention from the media and cat lovers, creating a unique cat culture and turning it into a well-known attraction. The cats here are clean, friendly, and well-cared for by the residents. Some even actively seek human interaction and affection. Nowadays, Houtong Cat Village is one of CNN’s recommended six best cat-watching spots in the world.
When I found out about Ding'aozi Cat Street in Xiamen, I was quite curious about what kind of place it was. Getting to Cat Street is a bit complicated, but with the help of the Gaode map, I just followed the navigation. The street is close to Xiamen University. I arrived at Cat Street in the evening. Ding'aozi Cat Street is actually in a bustling area and is a street themed around cats. Walking along the street, you can see various cat elements, like cat sculptures and cartoon graffiti of cats, but you won't see any real cats.
The nearby Cat Museum is where you can see real cats. Most of the cats stay in a space designed like a vintage tram. People can watch them from outside. Inside the museum, they sell various cat-themed items like hand-painted cat bottles, handmade cat dolls, and cat-shaped cookies. The walls are adorned with numerous cat-themed posters, comics, and paintings. Cat lovers will find it hard to leave this place.
Many shops on Cat Street are also painted with colorful, cartoonish images of different cat breeds, selling various Minnan specialty foods. At the end of Cat Street, you'll see the stunning Twin Towers, which are breathtaking at night. No matter how many times you see them, they never get old. Many people take photos or check in at this spot. Though Cat Street is a short street, it brought me many delightful surprises!
