We often get stuck in the fog of "what ifs"—thinking too much about an apology we never said, feeling sorry for a chance we missed, or being upset with the shy version of ourselves we used to be. But if we think again, we made choices back then with all the knowledge and courage we had at that time. Just like the math problem we couldn’t work out when we were students: it wasn’t because we didn’t try hard, but just that we didn’t know enough yet. Or the mistakes we made when we first started working: they weren’t because we didn’t care, but because we hadn’t learned the rules of the job yet.
I don’t want to judge the awkward old version of myself from how I see things now. The holes I fell into, the walls I bumped into, the tears I cried—none of these were useless. They taught me how to tell right from wrong, how to deal with hard times, and how to hold onto chances firmly when they come again. No one’s life is a story written ahead of time; the so-called "good choices" are just us slowly giving meaning to our past decisions through the work we do later.
Instead of thinking too much about the past, let’s look up and move forward. Turn the regret for what’s gone into caring about the present and hoping for the future. After all, no road in life is walked for no reason. Every experience is a strong base to help us move forward later.
