The Spring Festival of the Year of the Horse is getting closer, and I’m on my way home. As the car moves forward, the view outside slowly changes — from tall buildings and busy streets to country roads, open fields, and soft smoke rising from village kitchens. The noise of the city fades away, replaced by the quiet of the countryside.
This trip feels like a gentle switch: from living on my own, free to do whatever I want, to being back with family, sharing meals and laughter. From quiet dinners alone to a warm table filled with familiar voices. We often say the New Year doesn’t feel as strong as it used to, but this journey — no matter how far or how close — is the real New Year feeling.
For Chinese people, the New Year is all about reunion. It lives in every crowded train, flight, and highway. Some people change trains and planes again and again just to get home. Others drive long hours, tired but determined, just to say, “I’m home for the New Year.”
The trip before the holiday is both tiring and full of love. Coming together is not just a tradition, but a habit we never let go of. Every road home carries hope, and every family reunion feels extra warm. This journey is the best way to start the Year of the Horse — and the most real New Year feeling of all.
