Dear fellow Naija,
Let me, first of all, congratulate us for making it down here and becoming regular content creators on the platform. It might look like one of those normal feats where you just sign up to a social medium platform and start posting at first. But with time, we all got to know that hive is much more than that. Even if it is just a few cents you are making on your content right now, you are still ahead of millions of fellow Nigerians and billions of other people in the entire world.
I have been on hive for about 4 years now and I will rather not be somewhere else. Yes, I still squeeze out time to post on regular centralized social media largely to bring the message of decentralization, freedom, content ownership, and incentivization (just to mention a few) to my followers.
There is no doubt that centralized social media remains a massive pool of talents that hive can benefit from if they can be convinced to join the platform. Only a handful of users have been able to sign up from my social media quest and out of these, a paltry few have stayed to become relatively regular content creators on the chain.
Apart from social media, one on one conversation is perhaps the best way to get more Nigerian users to hive. A large percentage of those I have successfully onboarded are those that signed up as a result of a face-to-face conversation that we had concerning the blockchain. This particular method is more effective at retaining users because a real-life explanation of how the chain works lowers the learning curve for new users and makes their journey on the chain easier. Many of those who joined via social media hardly go beyond the creation of accounts.
This leads me to the important aspect of not just inviting users to the chain just for the sake of it. We should be deliberate in our invitation such as only people with real talents are invited to add value to the chain. Onboarding users just for the purpose of onboarding will end up filling the chain with a mix of spammers, scammers, and low-effort content creators.
Having said all these, below is the highlight of what we can do as users to bring more talented people from our dear country to the hive blockchain:
Through Centralized Social Media
This can be done through posting about hive on social media platforms, sharing our articles, and direct messaging of seemingly talented users and informing them of the perks inherent in creating content on the hive blockchain. We can go as far as helping them to create their accounts with their preferred usernames and sending them their keys. However, we should not forget to ask and teach them how to change their keys as well as delegate a little stake to their account for take-off purposes.
One-on-one or Face-to-face interaction
Like I said earlier, this seems to be the most effective method as it provides room to explain how the chain works in detail and makes the learning curve simpler for new users to summon. We can talk to our talented friends, acquaintances, neighbours, families, organizing hive-themed talk shows and seminars (especially on campuses), and many other related actions.
Such meetups, seminars or talk shows can be captured as pictures and or videos and posted to the chain with proof of authenticity. By doing so, I am certain many stakeholders would not minding rewarding such content which can serve to augment or even cover for whatever expenses that might have been incurred in organizing such events. If I do not know any, at least, I am certain that and OCD would not mind supporting such content.
Final words
We should all know that people's mentality is a bit difficult to change. Hence, we should not be in a hurry to onboard users that will just be figureheads on the blockchain. Many people are still skeptical about anything that has to do with cryptocurrency, hence, I really do not use this as one of the baits to lure them to the chain. I just tell them they can earn for their content and many of them figure later that their earnings are in crypto form.
I have this strong belief that many of us on the chain are far ahead of the game of ownership of content and financial freedom. Our services would come in handy by the time decentralization and crypto go mainstream. By then, it will not be totally out of place to charge a fee for our services.
Thanks for reading through.
