I am a young man living in the beautiful state of harmony, Kwara State, and a resident of Ilorin, the capital city. Ilorin is a pretty calm city with little traffic and violence reports, which has influenced my preference for this location.
I recently relocated to this area where I am residing last September, which is less crowded and more like a government-reserved area (G.R.A.); hence, I get to enjoy the serenity of the environment.

My house is about five minutes’ walk to the main road; however, the terrain is terrible for a drive, despite the presence of prominent government officials in the neighborhood. This bad road is worsening with the advent of the rains, as erosion has carefully dug dangerous holes in the road, making it a bit unmotorable. Well, I had to raise my car when I moved to this area to ameliorate the effects of the terrible terrain on the car bushings and absorbers.
Although my house is located in a serene environment with a G.R.A. setting, the road has been a discouragement.
Power supply is also not a luxury here, even though it is much better in comparison to other residential places in Ilorin, despite the Power Holding Company of Nigeria’s office being located a stone's throw away.
It is common knowledge to experience a power outage once a heavy rain falls, especially with a strong breeze, and this has been our ordeal in the past few days as the absence of power has restricted the availability of water in the compound.

Recently, a man, in collaboration with our neighbor, began to rear pigs in a tent that shares a fence with our compound. The environment has thus become a stench of the pigs’ excrement, as we all know that pigs are dirty animals. Our caretaker has confronted those rearing the pigs to relocate the pigs to an out-of-town settlement as the smell and attraction of flies to the environment are unhealthy. Just a week ago, the caretaker called to ask if there had been an improvement, as he was set to table the matter before the commission on environment in the state. I believe the lack of regard for law and order emboldened the owners to start and continue the rearing of pigs in a residential area.

I will not be forgiven if I do not mention a bad habit that is now practiced in Ilorin concerning waste disposal. At some points, the government made arrangements for the collection of waste at strategic locations by providing tanks; however, these were gradually phased out, with only limited numbers seen in the metropolis. Ilorin indigenes have imbibed the bad habit of dumping refuse and waste in the middle of the road both during the day and night. This is followed by trucks going around major areas to collect the discarded waste from the middle of the road. This is, however, bad because some dirt ends up being littered on the road, and some can block the drainage close by. The aesthetic effect is equally bad, as it speaks badly of the city to see dirt littered on the road. And this dirt in the public is a viable breeding ground for infectious organisms.
The government has admonished the public to desist from the act, with little or no significant improvement. Offenders have not been apprehended and prosecuted to the knowledge of the public, which probably would have served as a deterrent to such acts. The government should equally make adequate arrangements for waste disposal tanks and trucks in strategic locations within the metropolis.
