Sometimes, I wonder where we are headed in this we country when I see the things we do. How do I mean? There are too many things we promote, adopt and patronize which are not necessary and are uncalled for to me. Why? Because these things add no value in no way to us.
On the other had, there are things we should promote, encourage and support, which do add value to us and the society but unfortunately, we don't seem to support them. And because of this, to some extent, I come to understand the reason our PMB made the comment "lazy youths."
It's sad to see the number of youths who sit in their houses, subscribe their TV cables, fuel their generating set just to watch and not miss what they call "Big Brother Naija." Not that I'm being too holistic but how relevant is this show to the society and to those watching it? What value and lessons does it teach? If you know, you can tell me because I can't think of any.
Some even go to the extent of mobilizing people and paying them to vote for their candidate. Just look at the level of commitment and devotion some youths have for this reality TV show. And then I saw on the internet how funds was being raised for one of the evicted housemates and targetted amount being $100,000.
Aside from that, we come to see how many sponsors these show has and the huge prize for the winner. For a show that adds no value to the viewers and society at last. It's really sad if you ask me.
But what really saddens me is our attitude towards value-adding initiatives and programmes. We barely see NGOs that come up with programmes that are educating with huge winning prizes. I once saw a picture of a best graduating student who was being awarded with only 10,000 NGN. Shameful 🤦
Programmes like "Who wants to be a millionaire" is no more staging, we tend to have few or no scholarship schemes and talent hunts. Even if these kind of programmes are being initiated, you'll discover that it won't gain such great and massive support and sponsorship.
I just hope that we reassess our priorities if we must move Naija forward!!
