Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community celebrating live music on Hive. Each week is a new event, inviting creative expression and genuine connection.
This song is a picture of children in nature. It is a remembrance of my childhood in a small town called Lander, Wyoming, USA, where I grew up. And it serves as an invitation to go out and play. This is a meaningful song to me as I am working to nurture my inner child and remedy that tendency to overwork, or be overly serious. Our Hive Open Mic theme this week is "Toys," and so this song feels like a natural fit with its mention of bikes.
I played it outside, with the mosquitos biting. I notice that the mosquitos are mildly bothersome right now in the city of Austin, Texas, but I recall the mosquitos were majorly bothersome in my old Wyoming hometown. Worse, though, my uncle lives in Paisley, Oregon, where they host an annual Mosquito Festival, because of a myriad of mosquitos. All of this mosquito talk reminds me that my dear sweet brother is recovering from a spell of malaria, so I'm thinking of him.

A whimsical song for the inner child

Where the children freeze their toes making snow angels
Where the children crash their bikes into dust devils

Where the grizzly bears reside

I am a wild child with childish needs
