This is a Negro Spiritual, yet again ... when I thought of the theme, I imagined 13 generations of my ancestors, held in cruel bondage, and how they survived that. This not-often sung Negro Spiritual epitomizes the play of darkness and light, suffering and hope through faith, that held generation after generation to whom just surviving long enough to birth another generation toward freedom, 13 times down, was all that could be done..
