I've ditched the guitar for this week...
I took a break last week as I was feeling a little under the weather and didn't write any songs. It's such a blessing to be part of this wonderful community and I have missed listening to the amazing music that is uploaded each week.
This week's theme is Optimism and I am feeling rather optimistic at the moment. Quite a few good things are happening in my life and being gifted this piano was one of them. My daughter's friend who lives in a bus offgrid just didn't have any space for it anymore. So, I have been placed in charge of looking after it. As you can see from the smile on my face in the picture above, I am over the moon.
The piano was the first instrument I taught myself to play. Pretty much all the pianos or keyboards I have had over the years have been given to me in some way. My grandmother gave me an old upright piano when I was 6 years old. I started by trying to figure out songs from musicals, such as Cats and Evita. It then progressed to slightly more complicated songs.
I had piano lessons for about a month but found it easier to ask the tutor to play the song to me and then I would remember it. I found it difficult to learn to read music and never advanced beyond the basic notation. What I figured out at a young age is that I can listen to a song and work out how to play it. Normally just a simpler version if it's a more complicated piece such as The theme from the movie The Piano.
When we lived in Sark, a friend gave me a Baby Grand which squeezed in perfectly in the house. I loved to play it but when we moved it had to stay on the island. It would have been a mission to take it to Spain and there certainly was no indoor room to put it in.
I don't think my skills are great and I am totally in awe of the way my dear friend
plays so beautifully. Perhaps, one day if I ever learn to read music I can be half as good as her. For now, though I am content with what I can do with it and I do like to have fun. It is my natural therapy.

So for this week's theme, I have decided to play a little song I composed about 8 or so years ago when I was pregnant with my son.
Our family was going through a tough time and I have always turned to music to help me cope with stressful situations or when I am feeling depressed. So this little tune came about and has quite a happy feel to it. I used to compose quite dark-sounding pieces, so this was a first for me back then. It hasn't got a title, so I went with As Yet Untitled.. The filming is a little odd as I was using the front camera on my phone which seems to film in reverse. So I look like I am playing the piano backward haha.
