Throughout history, people have suffered oppression because of differences in appearance, gender, religion, sexual orientation and race...to name but a few. Many have died because of the things they stand for and their beliefs. We might consider that we live in a modern world but still slavery continues in hidden pockets of our world. Still racism persists, and prejudice is still obvious against people who just want to live their lives peacefully and in their own way.
The only way that oppression can stop is if people pull together to change things. It's not easy to stand up for the things you believe in, or to stand up for other people, but we must do this in order to make the world safer and better for everyone.
In the song I have chosen, the singer reminds the listener that we can find a hero in ourselves if we look for it. Perhaps a hero is what is needed to help others and to help ourselves to overcome oppression. I'm reminded in this song of countless real life heroes across the world, who have stood their ground and risked their freedom and lives in order to bring about change.
