Hello everyone. Welcome to the third day of the month of August 2023. Gentlemen, the final round of group matches in the ongoing Women's World Cup 2023 co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia was played today. South Korea who faced Germany played out a goalless draw (0-0) and Colombia surprisingly lost to Morocco by (1-0). Colombia and Morocco ended with six points apiece in the group although Colombia tops with superior goal difference. Germany and South Korea were then sent packing.
The round of sixteen starts on Saturday 6/8/2023 with Switzerland playing against Spain while Japan squares up with Norway. Let's see how those matches will pan out. Larry then turns his attention to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from Africa. He finds out that on this day in 1960, The Republic of Niger gained its independence from France. Since then they've experienced both military and civil rule. Last week, some military juntas staged a coup toppling the democratic President Mohamed Bazoum.
Larry remains in Africa as he finds out that on this day in 1934, Jonas Malheiro Savimbi, an Angolan politician and leader of a long-continuing guerrilla insurgency against the postindependence government of Angola was born. Jonas Malheiro Savimbi was also the leader and founder of the popular UNITA (the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola).
From Africa, Larry moves into the US. He finds out that on this day in 1958, the US atomic submarine Nautilus performed an unparalleled accomplishment by passing beneath the thick ice cap of the North Pole.
From the US, Larry moves over to Europe as he finds out that on this day in 1940, following the takeover of the Baltic republics by the Soviet Union, Lithuania was "accepted" into the USSR.
Larry then moves over to the events of the WWI. He finds out that on this day in 1914, Germany declared war on France in World War I.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from Italy. He finds out that on this day in 1778, The opera house La Scala opened in Milan and the event was marked with the performance of Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry picks up some of his parcels and heads out to begin his deliveries.
