Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for friday, the 23rd day of December, 2023. It appears they have gone back to their usual ways, Manchester United. Everyone thought that they'll build on the momentum garnered in their last match against Liverpool and get something out of their succeeding matches. But alas! Thry lost yet again., This tike to WestHam United (2-0). Thry are now down to 8th on the log. The loss was never a shock to those who have been following events recently.
Meanwhile Arsenal showed grit and class to draw (1-1) against Liverpool today. Thats the stuff champions are made off. Too difficult to surmount. Kudos to the Gunners anyway.
After the matches Larry then turns his attention to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from Poland. He finds out that on this day in 1995, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, a former apparatchik of Poland's ruling communist party, was sworn in as the country's president, having barely defeated Lech Wałęsa, Poland's first postcommunist president.
From Poland, Larry goes to Russia. He finds out that on this day in 2013, Mikhail Kalashnikov, the Russian weapons inventor who designed the AK-47 (automatic Kalashnikov Model 1947), an assault rifle that became one of the most successful and widely used weaponry of the modern age, died in Izhevsk, Russia.
From Russia, Larry goes to Romania. He finds out that on this day in 2001, Argentina announced the suspension of payments on its external debt, the largest debt default in history.
From Argentina, Larry goes to North Korea. He finds out that on this day in 1968, Eighty-two crew members of the USS Pueblo were released after being held captive for 11 months by North Korea, which claimed the US Navy intelligence ship had entered into their seas.
From North Korea, Larry goes to the Ottoman Empire. He finds out that on this day in 1876, The Ottoman Empire's first comprehensive constitution went into force, granting the Sultan full executive power.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from the world of literature. He finds out that on this day in 1815, Jane Austen, a British author, published Emma, her fourth book, which is about a bright young woman who gets into a lot of romantic trouble because she believes she can find the right match for everyone.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
