Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for tuesday, the 23rd day of July, 2024. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed that important midfielder Kevin de Bruyne will stay with the club. De Bruyne has been heavily linked with a summer transfer to Saudi Arabia. He has one year remaining on his Blues deal and stated last month that he would have to consider an offer from the Saudi Pro-League due to the "amazing money" offered. But that rumour has been quelled by the head coach Guardiola.
Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from Egypt. He finds out that on this day in 1952, the Free Officers, a nationalistic military group commanded by Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser, staged a coup that deposed Egypt's King Farouk I, ending the monarchy and putting Nasser to power.
From Egypt, Larry goes to the world of astronauts and cosmonauts. He finds out that on this day in 2012, Sally Ride, the first American woman to go into space, died at the age of 61 in La Jolla, California.
From the world of astronauts and cosmonauts, Larry goes to the world of music and entertainment. He finds out that on this day in 2011, Amy Winehouse, a British singer-songwriter who won five Grammy Awards for her Motown-inspired album Back to Black (2006) but struggled with substance abuse, died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27 in London.
Larry loves Amy Winehouse songs especially "Back to Black". Sit back and enjoy it.
From the world of music and entertainment, Larry goes to Yugoslavia. He finds out that on this day in 1997, Slobodan Milošević became President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) after serving as President of Serbia from 1989. He was later charged with genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes related to the Kosovo conflict, and died during his trial in 2006.
From Yugoslavia, Larry goes to Oman. He finds out that on this day in 1970, Sultan Saʿīd ibn Taymūr of Oman was deposed by his son, Qaboos bin Said, in a palace coup.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from Ethiopia. He finds out that on this day in 1892, Haile Selassie I, Ethiopia's ruler from 1930 to 1974, who attempted to modernise his country and led it into the mainstream of African politics after World War II was born in Harer, Ethiopia. He admitted Ethiopia to the League of Nations and the United Nations, and he established Addis Abeba as the main headquarters of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union).
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
