Okay, I'm not old old... I'm more of an early middle aged person. But I think I have to get it in my head that I'm no longer a young adult... even if I feel like it in my brain. Not looking in the mirror also helps with that illusion, seeing as I never actually see that I've properly gotten the hallmarks of an extra couple of decades! Silvering hair (and receding hair!).
So, the little bits of aches and pains have started... and I'm supposed to keep up with the excercise and all of that. Which I do sporadically... I have to get much more disciplined with that. I don't want too many more relapses of a crap back and shooting pains in my foot.
But the thing that is really much more noticable than ever is my stomach and the way that I'm less and less able to handle certain foods. Cheese and too much milk have always been a bit of a danger for me... and I'm a bit of a lightweight when it comes to alcohol.... certain types give me a bit of a headache or a real bad sleep through the night.
On the alcohol front... wines and beers are pretty bad for me... and ciders are borderline. I'm not too sure what it is about them, but I will get a bit of a headache, and then sleep really badly after even just a single drink. Meanwhile, spirits are no problem! I've always been a bit like that, with a heavy preference for the top shelf... but that has gotten more and more pronounced as I've gotten older. And so, it is to my wife's dismay that I will often ask for a sweet liquor to have with my dinners when we go out... instead of the usual beer or wine. She gripes that I should just order a soft drink or a mocktail instead, and then have the liquor with dessert instead.
Anyway... the other big change in my diet has been the removal of milk completely.... and replacing it with oat milk instead. I thought that I would hate the taste of oat milk... but I've gotten to quite like it! And now I'm one of those irritating annoying people who can't just order a regular flat white... but has to make the substitution with oat milk instead. But, I'm much less bloaty and farty! It is amazing what that tiny amount does for me... two coffees with milk replaced, and I feel so much better! My wife says it is all just in my head though...
Meanwhile, I've also found other things that I'm starting to avoid like crazy... eggplant and lentils seem to wreak havoc on me... pity, because I really like them. And there is something about the baked sausage rolls (also really nice) from the university cafe as well... or the relish...
... and I can pretty much guarantee that most oil fast foods will be a disaster now.
I'm building up the list of things to be wary of... at the moment, it isn't that many things... but making sure that I'm being careful has made a huge difference!
