Ahhhh... as the British monarchy had its moment these last few days... well, it was a stark reminder that the concept of royalty and Kings and Queens... it belongs to a long dead age. It is somewhat bizarre in this day and age to think that there is something intrinsically special about a few people who are born into such wealth and privilege.
Sure, there is something a little bit quaint about all the pomp and circumstance... but when you think about all the money and attention that goes to something that seems like it is out of an archaic reality TV show.... well, it is time to reflect upon whether or not this sort of thing really deserves to exist in the modern age. After all, these are just people... and not particularly well behaved ones either! Long gone are the days when they were considered superior due to some God-given birthright.
... and as an Australian, it is particularly galling that our Prime Minster had to declare an oath of fealty to a foreign monarch... and that we are considered subjects who should also consider mouthing words of fealty as well! Well, screw that...
A Head of State in this day and age is the subject of the people, they should declare fealty to the population... and not the other way around. Australia is long overdue to become a republic... and to have an homegrown Head of State, that likely functions in the similar vein to the Governor-General... one who would have veto powers, but not an overarching executive function like the American President. I'm really not a fan of the American model of democracy... Australian democracy is different enough at the moment, but in danger of falling prey to the problems of the United States.
I think that this last week will have solidified a lot of minds in Australia after all the glamour and pomp of the coronation is over and done with. Some will retain a loyalty to the Crown.... whilst others will start to think about WHY, as an independent nation, should declare fealty to a bunch of rich people who live in a different country?
... after all, it wasn't that long ago when the British monarchy overthrew our democratically elected government! No independent nation should have that threat hanging over us...
