I don't think I was ever a fan of conventional subjects in school—I mean subjects like geography, math, or history—but because I studied at a Catholic school, specifically a Don Bosco school, we also had religion classes, and I really liked the way they taught them. They weren't boring at all; they were very dynamic. In elementary school, Brother Luis (our English and religion teacher) was a kind old man who, like Don Bosco, loved young people, so he always gave us good advice and explained religious topics not only with faith but also with enthusiasm. His classes were very cheerful and fun. Sometimes he would show us religious cartoons, and then we would have to discuss them to clear up any doubts. At school there was also a pastoral group, which was like an artistic organization for young people who did a little bit of everything: music, theater and dance, but even though I always wanted to belong to it, at first they wouldn't let me because I was very young (I was in primary school) and when I went to secondary school (of the same Don Bosco school) I joined the Show Band, so this led me to my second favorite "subject", and I will explain what it is about.
Creo que nunca fui fan de las materias convencionales en el colegio, me refiero a materias como geografía, matemáticas o historia, pero debido a que estudié en un colegio católico, específicamente un colegio Don Bosco, también recibíamos clases de religión y de verdad me gustaba la manera en que impartían estas clases, porque no lo hacían de forma aburrida sino muy dinámica. En la escuela primaría, el hermano Luis (nuestro maestro de Inglés y religión) era un simpático viejito que al igual que Don Bosco amaba la juventud, así que siempre nos daba buenos consejos y nos explicaba los temas religiosos no solo con fe, sino con entusiasmo, así que sus clases eran muy alegres y divertidas, a veces nos hacía ver películas religiosas en dibujos animados y luego teníamos que debatir sobre ella para despejar dudas. En el colegio también había una pastoral, que era como una organización artística de jóvenes que hacían de todo un poco: música, teatro y danza, pero a pesar de que siempre quise pertenecer a ella, al inicio no me dejaban porque yo era muy pequeña (estaba en la escuela primaria) y cuando pasé a la escuela secundaria (del mismo colegio Don Bosco) ingresé a la Banda Show, así que esto me llevó a mi segunda "materia" favorita, y ya les explicaré de que se trata.
Then I started taking dance classes, not as a formal subject, but as extracurricular activities for the Show band I belonged to. It was a very rewarding experience that allowed me to learn a lot, fostered my creativity, and helped me express myself through this art form. We had several teachers, and we learned something different from each of them, but I learned the most from the last one: new techniques, artistic expression, and above all, a lot of discipline. In the band, we also learned to dance in formation, to create routines with the entire dance troupe and the musicians, we went to national and international competitions, I met many people and made several friends, so I remember it as a very beautiful stage in my life, full of emotional and professional growth. I am very grateful to God, my mentors, and my bandmates.
Luego empecé a recibir clases de baile, no como una materia formal, sino como clases extraacadémicas para la banda Show a la que yo pertenecía, y fue una experiencia muy grata que me permitió aprender mucho, fomentó mi creatividad y me ayudó a expresarme mediante ese arte. Tuvimos diversas profesoras y de cada una de ellas aprendimos algo diferente, pero de la última fue de quién más aprendí: nuevas técnicas, expresión artística y sobre todo mucha disciplina. En la banda además aprendimos a bailar en formación, a hacer esquemas con todo el cuerpo de baile y los músicos, fuimos a competencias nacionales e internacionales, conocí a muchas personas e hice varios amigos, así que lo recuerdo como una etapa muy bonita en mi vida, de mucho crecimiento emocional y profesional, así que estoy muy agradecida tanto con Dios como con mis mentores y compañeros.
School is a stage of learning, character formation, bonding, and unforgettable experiences, so I am very grateful for everything I learned and experienced during my school years, and although, as I said, I don't have a favorite conventional subject, I did learn a lot.
La escuela es una etapa de aprendizaje, de formación de carácter, de vínculos y de experiencias inolvidables, así que estoy muy agradecida con todo lo que aprendí y viví en mis años de colegios, y aunque como les dije, no tengo una materia convencional favorita, sí aprendí mucho.
