Over It

I'm done with winter.

Done with the cold. Done with the gray skies. Done with being stuck inside. Done with looking out the window at nothing but dead grass and bare trees.

I want to go outside without multiple layers on. I want to feel the sun on my face. I want to take a walk without it wrecking me. The cold aggravates my lungs. Bad lungs and cold air don't mix. So I'm stuck inside while winter drags on.

I want to go fishing. Throw some lines in the water. Sit there and not think about anything except whether something's going to bite. Just me and the water and some quiet.

But really I want to get my youngest son out there with me. He's in school and works. Time is harder to come by. I get it. But some of my best memories are fishing with my kids. Doesn't matter if we catch anything. Never really did. It's the sitting there together. The conversations that happen when you're not trying to have a conversation. The comfortable silence between casts.

I miss that. Want more of it while I can.

I'm tired of the short days. It gets dark at 7 PM and my brain thinks it's time for bed. The lack of sunlight does something to you. Drains the energy right out. Makes everything feel heavier than it needs to be.

I want to work on my yard. Plant those tomato seeds once spring arrives. Open the windows and let fresh air into this house. Do something outside that doesn't involve bundling up like I'm heading to Antarctica just to check the mail.

Spring can't come fast enough. I know it's coming. The days are getting a little longer. But it's not here yet and the waiting is getting old.

That damn groundhog saw his shadow. So apparently we've got more of this to look forward to. Thanks Phil. Appreciate it.

I'm not asking for summer. Just give me some 50 degree days. Some green. Some life. Something other than this cold gray bullshit. Give me weather I can actually be outside in without paying for it later.

Until then I'll be here. Waiting. Complaining. Counting down the days.
