I've never really used mind mapping though I've heard of it a great deal. I've drawn bubbles and lines when brainstorming but never committed to it as an actual study method. That's about to change...I think.
Here's my problem. I have an exam study plan. Twenty sessions across four domains. The flash cards are built out and the structure is solid. But I haven't been doing the work. The study plan just sits there.
Flash cards work for me and always have. But clearly something is missing because I'm not studying for the exam like I usually would. So my though is that I need another tool in the mix. Something to make this stick in my thick head.
recommended a book called How to Mind Map. So, I bought it. Just received it after waiting through the holiday backlog of shipping. Now I have to actually read it and do something with it.
This exam is an IT governance framework exam. The domains connect to each other. Governance bleeds into Resources. Risk touches everything. Memorizing definitions won't cut it. I need to see how the pieces fit and mind mapping might help with that...Or it might just give me another thing to not do. We'll see.
I'm going to try both paper and digital mind mapping. Paper because there's something about physically drawing that helps me think. Digital because I can edit without starting over and access it anywhere. Probably going to mess around with a few free tools to see what clicks. There is Xmind, FreeMind, Miro, and Coggle to name a few that I am looking at. If anyone has a recommendation for one that is easy to use, let me know.
No idea which one will stick. Maybe none of them. Maybe I end up preferring a notebook and a pen. That's fine. The point is to try something and see what works.
Step one is reading the book. Step two is experimenting. I'll report back...maybe, if I remember.
Thanks for reading,
Joe
