I tend to be a pretty organized and methodical person. Whenever I have something I ”need to do,” I like to get organized ahead of time, gather up all my bits and pieces I think I'll need to complete the task, and then I like to work on the project from beginning to end... and then I'm done.
Our Multi-tasking World
I've always royally sucked at so-called ”multitasking.” And even though there's growing evidence that there's actually no such thing as multitasking, the world still seems to be primarily set up for people to work a little bit on this and a little bit of that and a little bit on some third thing, all at the same time… while not ever getting to a point where a person could thoroughly ”get in the groove,” and concentrate on a single thing for any length of time.
Purely from a personality perspective, I've always found it extremely frustrating to have to start on several additional things before I finished the first thing I was working on. The eternal loss of focus seems to just slow me down and I feel like I'm wasting a large amount of time switching between one task and another.
I suppose I decided that this was actually noteworthy enough to blog about when I realized it seems like we live in a world that makes it almost impossible to do one thing at a time! At any given moment there is just so much we allegedly "have to" attend to that sticking to a single thing puts us at a deficit.
Additionally, I have noticed the subtext that there is often more value placed on being able to say ”I'm working on it” — as that might apply to multiple things — than there is in saying ”I've done it.”
And "having done it" is less of an invitation to get a pat on the back, than an opening to get new stuff dumped in your lap!
Welcome to Your "Fossil" Years?
Maybe I'm simply an old fossil who was born in a different (and slower) age, but I've never found that the term working on it holds a lot of value. You've either done something or you've not done something. Unless, of course, you're right in the middle of doing some very specific thing… as I was right in the middle of doing our taxes this past week. But I wasn't also right in the middle of doing a bunch of other things. There's a difference!
Not so long ago, I was reading an interesting article about the way our increasingly ”fragmented” lives are actually created that way by design, by a combination of large social media groups and marketers as a means to actively prevent us from being able to ”keep our eye on the ball” — that is, a single ball — for any period of time.
When we're too distracted to concentrate on anything, we also become too distracted to think for ourselves! Which — alas — walks rather hand-in-hand with some conspiracy theorists' assertion that we are all being sucked into some latter-day version of "The Matrix."
Far fetched? Not so sure it is, anymore...
And with that, I’m going to return to concentrating on getting my eBay items listed...
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!
