Today was another one of those days where I was extremely busy all day long, but actually managed to get almost nothing from my to-do list taken care of.
I seem to have more and more of "those" days as I age... and I have slowly learned not to fight it, and not be upset about it.
Mending Fences... Quite Literally
A couple of months back, I wrote about the horrific storm that came though our part of the world... and we've been spending the past six weeks or so slowly clearing up debris and locating "misplaced things" from strange places under trees or stuck inside hedges.
One of the "fun things" that happened was that the wind was strong enough to — quite literally — blow the wooden boards off the uprights on part of the fence towards our neighbor towards the south.
After some six weeks, we finally had a nice sunny day that was not windy or in the deep freeze... so I went outside and did the repairs, as best I could. At least one board was gone forever... nowhere to be found on our property, or our neighbor's.
The timing of the fix couldn't have been much better: Our neighbor went to Florida to visit family at the beginning of December, and her parting words were "When are you planning to do something about that fence?" I finished the repair around 2:00pm, and our neighbor returned from her trip about 3:30! I actually thought she'd be away till January 3rd — silly me!
Deep Thoughts, and Other Nonsense!
Whenever I am doing work that involves home maintenance, or gardening, I often find myself thinking about this-and-that... and today I was considering how many people say that what holds them back from writing is that they don't feel like they have anything "deep and meaningful" to share with people.
But the vast majority of the writing we're exposed to on a daily basis isn't deep and meaningful... at best it might be informative, but a large part of the time it's somewhat rambling and incoherent.
Much like this blog! (Well, perhaps minus the incoherent bit...)
Many of the blogs I enjoy reading tend to be funny, rather than deep. And because I largely write all this stuff as a hobby and pastime, I don't even feel particularly inclined to be deep and meaningful... even if that's occasionally what comes out. In fact, during my formative writing years, my aspirations tended towards the writing style of humorist Dave Barry.
That said, I never actually pursued writing as a humorist...
Anyway, after fixing the fence in the nick of time, I had a lovely conversation with Mrs. Denmarkguy — who happens to be a brilliant writer — about the idea of thoughts that have no deeper meaning, AT ALL.
It was a bit of a humorous take on the way we were trained in school by teachers who'd ask questions like "So what did the poet MEAN by that?" to which my preferred — by naturally unspoken — answer might have been something "maybe he just likes the shape of the letter S..."
So what's my actual point here? Sometimes we can really benefit from lightening up a bit!
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the final day of 2022!
