Even though I typically start off my week with the good intentions of being productive and getting off to a running start, I must admit that I sometimes fall into the rabbit hole of reading articles about the state of the world and humanity, and watching YouTube clips about various social and political issues.
And so, this Monday didn't go exactly as planned!
Well, at least not all of it...
The reason I ended up adding the word "depressing" to the title of this post is the fact that no matter what the opinion might be, or what the political leanings might be, essentially none of these squawking heads actually seem capable of coming up with solutions to tangible real-world problems that aren't possessed by the fatal flaw that they assume that everybody in the universe thinks like them.
And I don't care whether you're a Ben Shapiro, or an Andrew Tate, or a Trevor Noah, or a Noam Chomsky or even a died in the wall Anarcho-Capitalist preaching the virtues of Austrian economics, we always end up back at the same place which is with the false assumption that however great you may think your idea is you're making the false assumption that everybody in the world wants what you want.
Newsflash: They don't.
And the fact that you can talk REALLY fast, and say (or insinuate) that anyone who disagrees with you is clearly an idiot does not actually alter reality to fit your ideology,
It all leads me to sadly conclude that perhaps the single most feared question any of these Talking Heads could possibly be asked would be to have to reasonably explain why what they're espousing is actually a good thing in a real functioning society. Not just good for them and their small cadre of fanatical followers, but good (enough) for a substantial majority of the population.
Not so long ago, I read an interesting opinion piece opining that one of the bravest positions to hold in the 20's is that of a moderate.
Even such a notion as people behaving from rational self-interest is a dodgy proposition at best because a lot of people aren't rational and they have likely incurred substantial trauma and psychological damage in their life... sufficient enough to be off their rockers, and they may not even act in their own best self-interest, and very little about them is rational.
And so, you end up having to contradict your own ideology in order for these people to actually exist within your parameters, because your entire premise is based on the fact that the world isn't actually run by psychopaths.
And so, we effectively end up with a scenario where most theories put forth are essentially invalid because they fail to take into account... oh, what do we call it, again? Oh, that's right, real life!
Seems to me that pretty much all idealistic ideologies collapse once they are removed from intellectual think tanks inside ivy-covered buildings. Doesn't matter whether you're a commie, or a rabid Alt-Right'er.
The only things that can be even somewhat functional are blended systems of compromise. Alas, that's not something we're likely to have people agreen on, anytime soon!
