REACHING THE GOAL LINE
Life is all about quality. If you can't do the things you enjoy, what's the point?
BE BOLD
As we age our joints degrade, and all of the things we did in our youth seem to catch up with us.
This is a story about my husband's journey over the last decade to improve his quality of life.
As a young man was an athlete, he played both baseball and basketball. He is a big guy, 6'5" 225lbs strong as an ox. He played both sports in college, he was quite a player, a star really, his name still hangs on the wall at his college for an MVP award as well as scoring over 1000 points during his years at school.
As I was saying in my opening, things we did when we were young rear their ugly heads as we age.
In Bob's case, all that training, running, and pounding the hardwood caught up with him. Both his hips and knees took the worst of it, and he made the choice 10 years ago to have his first hip replaced. Although his other hip was somewhat beaten up, the doctors said he had some time before the second hip had to also be replaced.
Fast forward to November 2021, 2nd hip was replaced.
Although that surgery went extremely well, his knees were giving out. It got to the point where he was in pain all the time, not the quality of life he was planning on when he retired.
April 2022
Without hesitation, the man made the decision to have both knees replaced. He was hoping to have one surgery with both knees done at the same time, but that was not to be the case. On the advice of his doctor, it would be one at a time.
Anyone that has had knee replacement surgery knows it is brutal. I was shocked when I got him home and saw the swelling and bruising, from his hip to his toes, awful, thank goodness for pain meds.
He did have outstanding care at Morristown Hospital, their orthopedic department is famous for its success rate with joint replacement. He was in good hands.
October 2022
Back to New Jersey, a repeat performance, knee #2. I think I was more worried than he was, in fact I asked him if he was scared, worried, or afraid of anything close to what I was feeling a few days before this next journey. He smiled, looked at me, and said point blank, if I die I won't know it, what a way to go, asleep from anesthesia. I wanted to punch him.
I almost, almost mentioned about how hard the recovery was going to be, I mean he had been there just six months earlier this year, it was tough , but I left that thought in my head.
Quality of Life
Now that the deed is done and I have him all to myself, safe at home and prepared for the recovery process, I am giddy, not from the 4 joints you may have thought I was referring to hehe, but four new joints that will greatly improve my hubby's quality of life.
Life is short #silverbloggers, make it the very best it can be, modern medicine is amazing!
Much love,
