We have experienced some very unusual weather here in Upstate New York. Yes, we have had some crazy weather here in the past, but never have we ever seen such destruction of the forests that surround our homestead.
The black out began in the early morning Monday, we woke to white out conditions and no electricity. As we sat on our front porch with coffee in hand, heated with water from our wood stove, we listened to the loud cracks then falling of trees in the forests as tree after tree fell to the ground around us.
I was frightened, as I looked at the trees that surround our home.
The snow that fell was so heavy with moisture that it bent and broke lots of trees on not only our property but also those around us.
It was a dark day. UGLY
We rose to the task of staying positive, praying for those in Ukraine who are dodging bullets and thanked our lucky stars as well as God for sparing us. But as time went on we realized this could take awhile to sort out.
Ok, let's get the wood stove burning and melt some snow, at least we can wash up a little and flush the toilet. NO problem day one, I even got a pot on the woodstove and made some soup.
We claimed it was an adventure, happy and I were in this together. We had enough food to sustain us and we could get out soon.
The storm continued through the night as we heard the crashes of the trees and heard the wind howl, it was not a night I wish to remember.
But the birds seemed to be at wits end, so I tracked out to fill the feeders for I truly believed those little creatures were as baffled as I was at this extreme storm in Springtime.
The power grid was knocked out for 5 days here in Upstate, we just got lit up a few hours ago, now we will have to deal with all the food that has gone bad and all the dirty dishes that have piled up but this really means nothing to us, my family is safe and we are healthy and 5 days in the dark has helped me to realize how truly lucky I am.
