The Husband has a nose for a bargain. Especially meat. He has built a great relationship with the guy who runs one of the local "factory" outlets. They connect over farming, meat and, dare I say it, hunting. I hasten to add, that The Husband has not hunted for at least all the now twenty plus we have been together and for many years prior. The days when he did: it was for food. Definitely not the sport. He doesn't agree with gratuitous hunting; he does, however see the sensibility for culling and wildlife management. And, obviously won't turn up his nose when presented with the "by product"...ahem...
The upshot: last evening's braai was Eland rump. Served with a side of robot peppers sauteed with red onion, garlic and ginger. Essential for me because I simply cannot do just meat and potato. Truth be told, I could have lost the meat all together.
Eland is also bovine. The Husband was in his element and ate every morsel of that large slab. I, however, could not. What I didn't eat will go into a salad or to go on a sandwich.
Oh, and the salad. The heroes: olives from our neighbours' garden now cured and pickled. And with the first picking of the season's lemom balm (Melissa).
On the olives
These are the result of my first effort at processing olives. It won't be the last.
Although I have added them to my market stock (there they are, bottom right - the first three sets of jars), I am kinda hoping they won't sell all before the next season - well, truth be told, they won't - because we are eating them!
I have will also keep my marbles round with our lovely neighbours to ensure a source of olives next year!
Until next time, be well
