'You live in paradise, why do you want to sell?'
Those were the words of a departing guest who came all the way from Kansas City in the United States.
What are his thoughts on South Africa?
He loved it. Cape Town especially. Felt like he was in a dream - stunningly beautiful.
M was invited by a SA friend who booked staggered periods in my Airbnb to use as their base, while visiting various parts of our country. When they came back after their final jaunt, M said it felt like being back at home.
He loved our cottage; the green valley, seeing the tranquil pool and lush garden from his balcony, and hearing the birds at daybreak, had visitors on the roof: mischievous monkeys, Hadedas with their awful loud raucous sound, as well as Egyptian Geese with equally awful quacks at the top of their voices! M just revelled in the experience.
Yes, it's true that there are horrific farm murders, that we have upped our security the past couple of decades, and that we have almost become desensitized to violent crimes.
The people of SA can live in harmony if politicians stop inciting division. We all chat and laugh together when waiting in queues, a mix of people just wanting to get on with our lives, many disillusioned because promises of homes, water, electricity and job creation, has not materialized. We love our country and refuse to be driven out.
I am selling because it's a large property to maintain and I'd also like to be closer to family.
Where I end up buying is anyone's guess, as I keep on changing my mind.
So it's a good thing, in a way, that there's a big lull in the real estate market in our city.
Regular guests are over the moon that we're still operating as they love the tranquility and privacy our two units offer.
For now I'm enjoying my little piece of paradise, meeting wonderful people from all over, and seeing regular guests.
