Looking back at those crazy years of the late sixties to early seventies, I still wonder how my bestie and I survived those years unscathed. Surely we had angels watching over us, and we for sure kept them busy with our antics;)
Back then, very few teens had cars, unlike today's privileged ones. We either had to use a bus or a train if we could not get a lift with someone who had a car. Usually an older model, not a car 'out the box', as we used to call a brand-new car here in South Africa.
When our pocket money was low, we dared to hitch-hike👀 One could never dare do that in today's world! More than once, we got lectured by well-meaning folk who stopped to give us a lift to central Durban. They warned us about the dangers and asked if our parents knew. I still blush when I think of how we must have looked, two young teenage girls with their thumbs up on the highway🙈
We were young and stupid, and it was a safe world in our eyes. Well, it was safer back then, but not one hundred percent. Our parents would have had a fit if they knew what we got up to!
We were always on the lookout to do something different, something 'groovy'.
A group of us once got the crazy idea that we should sleep on the beach on a Saturday night. We knew of a 'safe' sheltered spot. It sounded really exciting.
We all told our Moms that we'd sleep over at our relevant friend's house. No problem, permission was granted as we'd done it before, and the Moms knew we'd be safe. We did not have much in our bags and set off to a club, before the 'sleepover', and afterwards started walking to the quiet spot at the safe beach. No one would even consider doing that today with crime so rife and those areas now filled with vagrants!
We'd hardly settled in on the beach sand behind a low wall when we heard footsteps and the sound of men's voices. Well, that was enough to get us to realise what a crazy idea this was! We grabbed our stuff and ran across the road to high-rise blocks of flats.
Back then, buildings were open, no security in the foyer, and we jumped into the lift and pressed the top floor. One flight of stairs took us to the rooftop. We would be safe there till the morning.
However, we forgot about the wind up high! It became freezing cold, and none of us slept very much that night!
When the sun came up at daybreak, we were cold, tired and feeling down because our exciting beach-sleepover turned into a disaster!
We all gathered our stuff, but I could not find my glasses. We ran back across the road to the beach to see if we could find it in the beach sand. It was not easy, as the gold-rimmed John Lennon glasses blended into the sand. Fortunately, one of my friends spotted the glasses, and they weren't damaged. I was very relieved that I would not have to explain the loss or damage to my glasses to Mom!
I may have told you a little of this expedition before; I cannot recall, but this is my response to The Silverbloggers Chronicles Prompt 34 - The Most Daring Thing you Did in Your Teens.
It was the carefree, heady days of the sixties and seventies, and we revelled in all that was happening, sometimes with some close calls, but we made it intact and able to tell the tale some fifty years later 😅
