Am I becoming immune to mishaps or has it finally dawned on me that when things go wrong that I know nothing about, I must not be too proud to
'Call a friend!'
And if the friend can't help:
'Call the plumber, the electrician, the mechanic, the tree feller, the appliance repairman, blah blah blah!
And of course, the empathetic insurance broker, yes, they do exist!
Before I tell you about those gremlins, I need to tell you about...
The Day Kloof went to the Dogs
A dear friend and I took Cynthia and Bongikosi for a jaunt to the Kloof & Highway SPCA, on a glorious, balmy day, with blue skies.
We wandered around their thrift stores; I found the perfect piece of original artwork for the cottage balcony, we bought some plants from the nursery, and enjoyed listening to live music while having a light lunch under the giant trees.
The 'diners' were not just of the human kind! This old man was licking out an ice cream bowl!
We saw these newspaper cuttings inside their little museum which gives a glimpse into the history of the village of Kloof.
The Three Gremlins
First out of the starting gates was the leaking waterpipe - not a 'burst waterpipe' as I told my insurance broker. I had to fork out for the repairs but was reimbursed promptly.
The second little gremlin was the kitchen tap that had to be replaced, at my cost this time, and I made sure it was a good tap. The guy at the hardware store told me it would last forever; I won't be around forever, so it won't be my problem if it packs up again!
When the third one struck today, I heaved a sigh of relief as that meant it would all be over, if 'they' were right. It was a screw in my tyre, the second one this year! The tyre was totally flat, Bongikosi took out the spare tyre which looks brand-new, but it needed air!
My friend and neighbour came to the rescue.
Looking at the state of the two front tyres, I realized someone out there was trying to tell me it was time for new ones, so a couple of thousand rands later, I had a set of brand-new tyres.
Thank heavens bookings increased again, after a very quiet period because of the municipal strikes and threats of rioting in our city. Otherwise, I would have had to settle for another mushroom plug in the tyre, and driven a little longer with tyres that were starting to look a tad too smooth to my liking.
My plans of completing a pathway on the other side of our house will have to be put on ice, however, much to my frustration!
I am making progress, and did not become a blubbering mess with the latest three mishaps; 'they' say it comes in threes, and I hope 'they' are right, whoever 'they' are!
I'd never seen this odd couple before, and they came down to the fence to say goodbye. What they are doing at the SPCA, I have no idea, but I will ask next time we visit.
Thoughts of selling the car and going the Uber route flashed through my mind again, but after a blissful day like yesterday, that thought was thrown right out of my head, for now at least!
