Question #46: Did you have a pet when you were a child?
Pets have always been part of the family. Before, they weren't seen as pets; people generally had several animals at home, at least in my case.
I grew up in a home with parents who were raised in the countryside. The backyard of our house was very large, and when we first moved there, it was full of all kinds of plants. It was like a forest, as I used to say when I was just 5 years old.
After a few months, they had the idea of raising chickens. They built a chicken coop in the middle of the yard, then fenced it in, and started putting tortoises in it because they liked them. They raised savanna tortoises, not for profit.
Then, my maternal uncle's favorite came to me with some white rabbits as a gift. I remember those rabbits didn't last long; I don't know what happened to them because they were well protected. A couple of squirrels also arrived, with a cylindrical cage so they could swing in it, my father said. Parrots and parakeets were always present.
Dogs, yes, if one arrived and something happened to it, another was found, as it was given a home. I remember some names: Damiron, Capitán, Melasa (she was a Doberman) much loved by everyone. She helped my father when he took her to the fields to herd the cattle to the pasture (a pasture was the place where the cattle were protected, spent the night, and rested; herding means driving the cattle all in a line).
Until one day a cow gave birth and died during delivery. That calf was raised at home; they gave it milk in bottles. I remember my father buying special feed for that calf, until it grew up and they returned it to the countryside. They named that calf Cachupin.
Well, at home I have a little dog that my son rescued from a garbage dump. It's with us because my son emigrated. My daughter has a little dog, but that one is with her.
I think I've lived surrounded by pets. My special pets have been tortoises.
