Question #47: Memories of Phone Booths

So many memories! Going to make a call was a real outing, complete with waiting in line and even overhearing conversations we weren't interested in. That's just how it was, that's how it was done.

It makes us realize how everything has evolved, how we communicate, how it was before and how it is now. We can compare, look back, and say how great it was to have those experiences. Services for making calls with more privacy were always appearing; people were always communicating. There were letters too, but this was the new, the best, the modern.

Although telephones were already common in homes back then, using them was a whole other story. They had locks and countless ways to prevent unauthorized use and ensure they wouldn't connect for more than an hour. There was the cost, the hassle, and the issue of whether you were expecting a call—in short, many details.

Phone booths were an experience, an excuse to leave the house and meet up with friends, eat ice cream, and even see that special someone. Before leaving, there was the list of questions parents would ask: "Did I make the call?" "Was there a line?" "It seems everyone went out to make calls today." "Did I have enough money?" "Is everyone okay?"

Another issue was that sometimes unfriendly hands would do things you didn't realize at the time. They'd remove the receiver, break it—as we friends often say, not-so-friendly people, without any conscience, regarding such essential services, especially in an emergency. Because the other thing was, not everyone had a phone at home.
