Availability or I can say less importance were given in reading / hearing stories. I am talking about 1970's and 1980's. But watching the same on television in the form of cartoons and series were popular among kids like us. Few books to my remembrance were Panchatantra Tales, Amar Chitra Kathas comics, the famous Jungle book... all these are Indian publications.
Those were days, where we had just one television channel and that was Doordarshan, sponsored by the government of India. The speciality of this channel was every kind of programmes, be it sports, entertainment, news, Health etc.... in different languages was broadcasted on different days .
As such we had a Fairy Tale stories, cartoon series, every Sunday at 10.00 a.m on Doordarshan. Every Sunday came in with a new Fairy tale story. I was too young , maybe in grade 5 or 6 and it was my favourite series. Hence, I made sure that I complete by homework before this predicted time, so that I have the privilege to watch my series, with no disturbance. I admired and adored each of these fairy-tale cartoon characters with great joy.
I remember Snow white and 7 Dwarfs which was one of my favorites playing on television. Oh! where she ate the red apple given by herbstep mother put her to death, until a Prince kiss bought her back to life. Then came in Cinderella where the Prince went in search of the Girl with a shoe worn by her and with whom he danced for hours. Another interesting fairy tale was Hansel & Gretel, the adventure of this little. brother and sister to find their lost way back home and their wicked step mother.
After years, it was nice to see all these once again in animated form and also, in movie screen along with my children. They were favourite even to my daughter.
Reading was far from my bucket list. But fiction and non fiction ones, which were my favorites, probably in my teens. I would proudly say that I became an ardent reader of Nancy Drew and Enid Blyton series in my college days. That was in 1990's.
Later on I was much interested in non fiction stories, though I kept myself occupied with both fiction and non-fiction books.
