It was a great day to clean all the cast iron pans and season them with Coconut Oil. The pans really needed a face lift since I have not done them in years. These pans were from my mother, and she cooked on them for over 50 + years. I have had them for the past 15 and love cooking with them.
I used oven cleaner to clean them, then placed them into a trash bag for a day. The result was pretty good considering how rusty they had become. I scrubbed them with steel wool until I felt they were clean enough.
I wasn't sure what oil to season the pans with, so I reached out to Pam since she had just cleaned and seasoned her huge cast iron collection, that is very impressive.
I used Coconut Oil per her advice and wiped off any excess.
I put them into a pre-heated oven at 425 degrees and let them bake for an hour. They came out looking pretty fine compared to when I started.
Bamboo Cutting Boards:
I cut a lemon in half and rubbed it all over the board, sprinkled on some baking soda and table salt, then scrubbed them well with the brush. After scrubbing them to death, I poured white vinegar onto each side and allowed the foaming action to take place.
After washing them well, I put them into the oven on the bread proof setting for 20 minutes or so. I wanted to make sure they were good and dry before putting mineral oil on them.
They really soaked up the oil and I hardly had any excess to wipe away.
These boards get used practically daily and I have had them for many years. It is worth taking time to clean them well to disinfect them and oil them a couple times a year.
After getting the boards and pans finished, I had time to go out into the greenhouse and start getting that ready for the seedlings. That is for another post so stay tuned my friends.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
