Ever since we moved to the farm we have cut our own Christmas trees.
Not wanting to cut down any of the bigger trees or the ones that are perfectly shaped we purposely look for a Charlie Brown tree. If you don't know what it means to have a tree like the cartoon character in the comic strip PEANUTS, Charlie Brown, it's a tree that is ugly and very sparse.
The selection of the tree represents a protest against the commercialization of Christmas.
After hearing the price our son paid for a tree, $110.00, I would say this special holiday has been exploited to the nth degree.
The trees we cut down were planted in a garden five years ago. This location was supposed to be temporary until I found a good stop for them. After five years of growing in the garden, there was no way to move them without killing them.
Year after year they had been browsed on by the deer. Needless to say, they were not the best of trees and they were getting to the point that they started blocking our view. Being that they are White pine trees, their needles are very soft, most often the types of trees your big-box stores sell. My idea was to bring them to the shop and meld the two together with electrical ties.
After securing a base for the tree and standing it upright this would be the best Charlie Brown Tree of all time.
Placing the tree right outside of the double doors that lead to our living room gives us a good view of the tree from the warmth of our home.
and I spent about an hour untangling the strings of lights before we could hang them. This is no fun at all, especially after you finally get all of the knots out and then the lights decide to go off.
At this point I was an onlooker,
sitting back and watching Robin go to town.
I did do a little more than just watch though, as I pointed out where some ornaments were needed to cover the bald spots.
A little to the left,
a little to the right,
up a smidgen,
down just an inch or two.
That's the kind of fellow I am, very helpful!
Merry Christmas to you'll,
and let's remember what this day should be all about!
