The hut Ravens that follow skier across the famous Wapta traverse have been talked about for years.
We were no different. Our group first encountered them at Balfour hut. These raven fly up from the valleys far below onto the massive icefields and feed on any scrap a group of skiers might leave. These ravens have learned that the huts that dot this remote wilderness are sources of food and are apparently worth the fly.
Coming in for Landing
I was out with my camera while at Scott Duncan Hut taking pictures of one that was landing near the gray water dumps set up near each hut by the Alpine Club of Canada.
The weather was fairly clear but really windy and was picking up a lot of snow. This raven was showing some real flying skill dealing with the wind whipping around at 80km/h.
Touchdown
Right before sundown the ravens would disappear back down into the valley.
