King Vulture Sarcoramphus papa
This King Vulture was an unusual surprise at the end of an afternoon in the valley in San Luis. In my recent trip to Costa Rica, in February, there were not a large number of raptors seen, as it was not a time of migration. That afternoon though we had a good list of raptors overhead including this first time (lifer):
Barred Hawk Morphnarchus princeps
The list included Short-tailed Hawk Buteo brachyurus, Broad-winged Hawk Buteo platypterus, Ornate Hawk-eagle Spizaetus ornatus, Bat Falcon Falco rufigularis, Black Vulture Coragyps atratus and Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura.
Turkey Vulture
It was fun to see such a nice variety of raptors in one relatively small area.
Good birding.
