I had a nice surprise walking around the dam one morning as I spotted a group of Canada geese with several tiny goslings.
The goslings were fluffy looking, and bright yellow. Canada geese are very protective parents, especially when their young are small. Interestingly, groups of geese sometimes look after each other’s goslings. Several families may join together, and the adult geese help keep watch over all the goslings in the group to keep them safe from predators.
There was another pair of geese nearby, but they were chased off after someone started feeding the others. I think the parent geese wanted their own goslings to have all the food, which is fair enough. At one point, a few of the goslings even seemed to lose track of their parents and swam over to the other pair. In the end, though, they found their way back to the right family.
I'm glad they knew what they were doing as I'd got no idea!
Thank you to and the team for running the contest.
