I was able to take several pictures of this majestetic bird here in Austria on different occasions and spots. Some times I got really close to the bird when it was flying directly above me to it's hunting grounds by the river. I am lucky that there are some spots that they visit more often and I try to take that opportunity and wait there for the bird to show up. Luckily enough the bird showed up there and I took severy pictures of it every time. Usually it is not that close but when I was there in January this year I could get some really closeup pictures of these birds. But also during several other photo trips to the danube here near Linz and on another spot in Lower Austria I was lucky to see and find them.
Unfortunately it is always a very short appearance and you don't really have time to configure your camera. Just bursting out some shots and hope that at least some of them are good, this is my strategy in a situation like this.

The more recent shots I took with my new mirrorless Z6 Camera and the older ones I still tookd with the D500 DSLR. I am happy that both Cameras are pretty decent and eventhough the light was not perfect I still could get some reasonable pictures. The Sigma 150-600 mm lens is really working fine with both of the cameras but sometimes I wish I had a better Apperture like F4.0. Especially when the light is not so good anymore or it is cloudy than It could probably help a lot. But back to these pictures, it is a lot of effort to find the right spots where birds like this fly above your had and most of the time it is simply luck. But beeing in the right spot and waiting there for hours is often also involved in the process. Waiting for hours and days, sometimes you are lucky and birds like this come out right in front of you and sometimes you don't even find smaller birds. Something that makes these kinds of pictures difficult to capture is that you cannot plan them and most of it is just waiting and luck.
