What's up, guys? This is my first post on this community and I would like to introduce you to this beautiful feathered friend: the golden tucan
Hello, my friends at Hive!
How are you? It's been a while since I discovered this community about birds and I simply loved it! So, I decided to join and share some pictures and things that I like about birds with you and also learn from other members!
I'm also a big fan of our #featheredfriends and I confess that I've even had my birdwatcher phase.
This is me, in action, trying to catch some beauties around!
I'm from Brazil and living in a country that has about 1971 species of birds, it is impossible not to be charmed by them! Around here you can find birds of all sizes and colors. It is awe-inspiring!
In today's post, I would like to talk a little bit about one of my favorite Brazilian birds: in Portuguese it's called "araçari banana" (Pteroglossus billion), but in English it's named as the golden toucan.
That's our beautiful friend
The golden toucan is a kind of toucan's cousin, since they are from same family. Also, they have a very similar temperament. I do not know if you have ever seen a toucan up close, but although it is a very beautiful and eye-catching bird, it is also quite awkward, noisy, and even a little slouchy.
I think this bird is such a sympa guy!
The golden tucan does not differ in temperament from their cousin, but it does have a unique characteristic: it is much greedier and, of course, loves bananas! It is also not a small bird and can measure up to 39 centimeters.
Hooolyyy yesssss... this bird loves to eat bananas (like me!!!)
One of the most striking things about this bird is the color of its feathers, which are yellow and of a very beautiful emerald green. Its beak is green and yellow and it has a red band that also color around its eyes, which makes us believe that it is a brave and imposing bird. But looking closer, you can see that he is a gluttonous and very funny bird! I laugh a lot when I see them around!
This bird feeds on fruits, especially hearts of palm. In Brazil, when the juçara palm went extinct, this also impacted the population of the araçaris here. Today, the juçara is an endangered species that is forbidden to be cut, which has helped in the maintenance of the species.
"Those bananas are mine. Don't you dare to come around!"
The golden toucans usually flock together, with 6 or 7 individuals. Here in Brazil, they are easily found in the Atlantic forest region.
For me, birds have a curious characteristic: in most species, the male is always more beautiful and calls more attention. However, in the case of Araçaris, this is not true. The male and the female are very similar, differing only in the size of their beaks.
The love affair of the golden toucan, however, is somewhat peculiar... To get a date and a successful night of love, the courtship involves the male pecking the female on the face. Besides, they don't bother to build a nest! In general, they steal the woodpeckers' nests and usually eat their eggs to lay their own. As I explained before, these little birds are pretty lazy...
I hope you come across a golden toucan one day because it's such a beautiful meeting! He act so gently to get the banana from my hand! I love it!!
This bird, no doubt, is very special!
I hope you enjoyed my post and I promise I will come back to tell you more about Brazilian birds!
Cheers and see you next time!
