I went down to the park again this morning to get some more bird photos. I was hoping to see some bald eagles but the nest was empty. The great blue herons are very active however so I did get a bunch of shots of them.
Heron in a treetop...
The herons are building their nests in the tall trees. These are giant sequoia, western cedar and other tall trees, so the birds are way up there...
It was an overcast day making it a little hard to photograph. All of these shots came out as black silhouettes against a white sky.
I've cropped these shots and processed quite a bit to open up the shadows because otherwise you really can't see anything.
Male heron bringing home some branches.
It is the males who gather the branches and the females who build the nests.
I'll show you a couple of other birds before closing this post. Here's a nice pair of Mallard ducks.
Canada Goose on the pond. There are plenty of other types of birds in the park, but at this point, I wanted to get out of there. I was getting tired of dodging people - I'm trying to stay as far as possible from everyone.
I took all these shots today in about 20 minutes. Above: even the cars in the parking lot are practising social distancing... Stay safe everyone!
