New Years Eve, none more so important than the one that drew a close to the year of hardship for so many. A year that saw 1.8million confirmed deaths due to COVID.
Being in Australia, we were fortunate to escape the full brunt of the first wave. I'm not sure we will again.
I was first drawn to with my daily black swan updates. They were my salvage in a time where I was only allowed to travel 5kms from my home. As we were coming into spring, many of the couples made nests and laid eggs, I shared them with you.
We watched as they hatched and began growing. We were upset when a nest didn't make it, even more so when another family of 5 cygnets were ravaged by someone's pet cat.
A father, caring for his cygnets was torn apart by a dog and many didn't make it.
Another 5 cygnets that were almost fully developed have been killed on New Years Eve as they tried to escape failing fire works. Like cannons firing at the enemy the cygnets fell to fireballs of colourful explosions designed for out entertainment.
Only one cygnet remains.
I'm actually quite upset about this and I will be raising it with environmental authorities over the coming days. We need to do more to protect our native animals and environment.
