There is a fledgling barred owl on the ground under the tree where the nest is, just outside my friends upstairs window
She was afraid it had fallen out of the nest. After doing some research, we found that it is normal behavior for them to wander around on the ground for the first few days after they leave the nest. It can take them days, and sometimes weeks, to learn to fly well.

If it is clearly injured or is being harassed, call wildlife rescue, but otherwise it should be left alone. The parents will be nearby and will come at night to feed it.
Diet
Mostly small mammals. Eats many mice and other small rodents, also squirrels (including flying squirrels), rabbits, opossums, shrews, other small mammals. Also eats various birds, frogs, salamanders, snakes, lizards, some insects. May take aquatic creatures such as crayfish, crabs, fish. *source
With the advice that People should just leave it alone., my friend was quite relieved that she would not need to climb any trees to put it back in the nest!
