Rain or no rain, babies have to eat.
Scurrying around all over the place with screaming babies following them. They are Cape Sparrows (Passer melanurus)
Heavy rain is coming down here right now and the garden is empty of all life. But here I will show you what happened a bit earlier, as the birds know the weather. As soon as a temporary break in the rain appears they come flashing down with their babies.
Soon this little guy will be able to feed himself.
But not quite yet, as I have seen him trying to eat and then crying.
Now here was a mom with twins.
She seemed to play the eenie, meenie, minie, mo, game, first come first served, with them. Feeding the biggest open mouth first.
The big and the small, as the mom was desperate to get food for her babies and Sally didn't mind.
The sparrows don't come near when Harry is around.
The doves also didn't mind the babies.
One mom was sitting on the tip of our Aloe tree, watching the sky. She was either checking for more rain, or watching out for predators.
And finally, there was one of the dad's at the right. I did not see any of the dad's feeding the babies and maybe the moms should start a protest action.
Not fair, the moms have to build the nests, keep the eggs warm and then feed the babies. The males all gather somewhere reminiscing about the past and trying to outdo each other with stories about their female conquests.
We had the very same situation in an inner suburb when I was still at school. I heard some of the guys stories and it was all old men's stuff. Everyone wants to be hero.
Maybe they have all been watching too many male sparrows.
And That's All Friends!
