In my yard I have 2 varieties of Woodpeckers, one is a Red-Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) the other one is a Hairy Woodpecker (Dryobates villosus). The Red-Bellied Woodpecker is slightly larger (23cm) than the Hairy Woodpecker(22.5cm). They both eat a variety of insects nuts, seeds and suet. You can find them in woodlands or the cities.
Woodpeckers live in hollowed out cavities of trees, the Hairy Woodpecker prefers live trees as the Red-Bellied Woodpecker excavates holes in rotten wood. They are fun to watch as they go up and down my tree looking for insects then going to my feeders to get some seeds or suet.
It has amazed me at how close they let me get to them before they take off to parts unknown. Eventually they show back up to my yard to feed some more.
