🦉 The European goldfinch or simply the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)
- Carduelis carduus (Latin) thistle
I am always happy when I meet these birds. For some reason they are quite rare in the forests of my city. And usually they only fly past in a flock. However, I have noticed that around February and early March there are mass flights of them through the city. There are a lot of them in the yards at this time.
The bird is almost entirely herbivorous, their favorite food is the seeds of thistle, burdock, nettle, as well as various ovaries and buds.
Once upon a time a goldfinch flew to my feeder. And in my memory it is the only bird that was not afraid of pigeons that are several times bigger than it.
