We're used to seeing these birds in winter on berry trees in parks and courtyards. In fact, they arrive as early as late September, arriving from the northern taiga forests. They depart as soon as spring begins, although they can still be seen until early May.
Sexual dimorphism in these birds is not pronounced. Males have yellow wingtips and tail tips, and a red spot on their wings. In females, these colors are not as vibrant as in males; they are faded and washed out.
