🦉 The tree pipit (Anthus trivialis)
- Anthus (ancient Greek mythology) Antus, son of Hippodamia, turned into a bird
- Trivialis (lat.) common, simple, banal
These birds arrive at the end of April, when the snow has already melted and enough insects have appeared.
It's in the spring, during the mating season, that these birds are most often seen in trees, as they spend the rest of the year on the ground. The male, perched on a branch, begins to sing, then flies upward, spreads his wings, and slowly descends back down.
But these birds mostly spend their time on the ground, nimbly running and weaving their way around blades of grass, and wagging their tails when they stop. This is what identifies them as members of the wagtail family.
